First Year Courses

The Preliminary Engineering Program (PEP) is common to all programs within Engineering. PEP courses cover arts and the basic physical, mathematical, and computer sciences. PEP also introduces the basic concepts of each engineering program. The preliminary program is as follows:

  • Applied Calculus I (MATH 1510) or equivalent
  • Applied Calculus II (MATH 1710) or equivalent
  • University 1 Chemistry (CHEM 1300)
  • Introduction to Computer Science 1 (COMP 1010)
  • Critial Thinking (PHIL 1290)
  • Design in Engineering (ENG 1430)
  • Introduction to Electrical and Computer Engineering Techniques (ENG 1450)
  • Introduction to Statics (ENG 1440)
  • Introduction to Thermal Sciences (ENG 1460)
  • Classical Linear Algebra (MATH 1210)
  • Literary Topics (ENG 1460)
  • Physics I (PHYS 1050)

After completing at least eight of the above courses, you can apply to enter one of the departmental programs: Biosystems, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Manufacturing, or Mechanical. Each one of these departments has a collection of specialty courses one needs to take in order to graduate.

ENGINEERING STUDENT AFFAIRS OFFICE

While in the Preliminary Engineering Program, you can go to see Student Advisor Judy Schroen-Galinaitis in the Engineering Student Affairs Office (E2-290 EITC) whenever you have:

  • Problems with registration or scheduling
  • Questions about Faculty of Engineering regulations or procedure
  • Questions about scholarships you may be eligible for

You can also contact Judy by phone (474-9808) or e-mail (judy@cc.umanitoba.ca).

The Student Affairs office maintains an open door policy and you are invited to drop by to discuss any matter. If they can't answer your questions they'll find someone who can.
